Hero of the Day

Arlington 35, Collierville 34 Another year, another shootout, another round of last-minute heroics for Arlington, as Drew Reed ran 24 yards for the tying touchdown with 32.5 seconds to play, and Kyle Mitchell added the extra point for a 35-34 victory over visiting Collierville Friday night. "We work harder, we were in better shape and we just kept playing ball," said Reed, who rolled right, then took off left down a wide-open corridor for the score. The sophomore finished the night with a team-high 71 rushing yards and hit 20-of-34 passes for 219 yards and two TDs to Corey Greer. The Tigers (3-1) trailed 28-14 at halftime and gave away one opportunity to tie the game at 28 as Greer dropped a sure TD pass at the Dragons' 3 early in the fourth quarter. But with 7:12 to play, and Arlington's hurry-up offense taking its toll, Greer got open for an 17-yard score and the 28-all tie. "You don't like missing a catch any time, but all you can do is go back and keep making plays," said Greer, a 6-3 senior who had eight catches for 132 yards, including an 18-yard score in the first quarter. After an exchange of punts, Collierville (2-1) answered back as senior Tucker Tubbs (14-of-28, 189 yards) threw his third TD pass, a 48-yard catch-and-run to senior Tyler Dixon (five catches, 80 yards) with 1:54 to go. But a bad snap led to junior Grant Smith's first extra point miss of the game, leaving the door open at 34-28. Junior Tavian Lott, whose long kickoff returns led to Arlington's two first-half touchdowns, returned the ensuing kick to his 40. Two passes to Greer and a pass interference call moved the ball inside the Dragons' 24, where Reed played Hero No. 1. "It was like this last year and we managed to pull one out," said Arlington coach Chris Wiley, whose team edged Collierville, 41-38, a year ago. "We adjusted our defense and they stepped up, and our offense just kept plugging and wearing them down." Hero No. 2 was junior kicker Mitchell, who calmly kicked the extra point after a Dragon timeout, then drilled the final kickoff into the end zone to back up the Dragons for what would be a futile last try. "The tee's always in my hand, and I'm always ready," Mitchell said. Dragons first-year coach Shawn Abel said, "their pace got to us, and in the end they got the plays they needed. We played hard, but Arlington played a great game." Collierville's Nick Sammons rushed for 82 of his 90 yards in the first half, including a 15-yard opening score, and added a 94-yard kickoff return that made it 21-7 with 7:36 left in the first half. Tubbs threw first-half TD passes of 15 yards to junior Hunter Bradley and 22 to senior Myron Horne (6 catches, 78 yards), and also ran for 56 yards. Arlington junior Jeremy Hollister added scoring runs of 11 and 2 yards.
